Grey hair can be beautiful especially when the following are involved:
(1) Shiny and healthy
(2) Bright but not yellow
(4) Not too long
In my opinion the best color for grey hair is "Redken Color Gels". These colors are what I call "see through colors" meaning that they look so natural and tend to take differently on different people and are somewhat transparent. This color looks like you were born with it.
My recommendation for perming is called Matrix Biolage Perm. It is strong enough for grey hair but gentle enough not to ruin the hair and has a great smell.
Using a brightening anti yellow shampoo can keep hair that has not been tinted nicely toned.

I was wondering about the Redken Color Gels. Where can I find them? Also was wondering are they colors I can apply myself or should they be done at a Salon? I like the idea of healthy colors. Also do they have amonia in them, as that tends to burn my scalp?
Thanks shirley
Redken Color Gels can be found only in a Salon. I recommend finding a Salon that uses Redken colors. Try www.redkencolor.com and choose: "Salon Locater". As for the existence of ammonia in Color Gels, I am not sure. My recommendation is to check when you locate a Salon that uses it. I do know that clients that have used it who were sensitive to ammonia had no problem. Let me know what you find out when you locate a Salon that carries it.And I will try to get more information. I know that
I have highlighted my hair intensley for over 3 years, then ended up with a blond color & it was fun for a while but now I want to go back to my natural color, brown. I'm not happy with my present product & would give Redken a try but wonder if I need to do something first to prepare this poor head of hair, before going to the Redken product. After 3 weeks the old lighter hair shows through & needs color again. I will probably need 3 or 4 haircuts to be free of the old abused hair. But I wonder if it's because I am missing a step. What do you think? Marcie
Marcie,
Yes you are right. You need to prepare your hair first. Please go to my older post called "Thirsty Hair". There I explain how to know if your hair needs conditioner or just needs to be strengthened, or perhaps both. If your color is changing so much soon after being colored, then you definitely have an issue with the condition of the hair. So the first step would be to get the hair healthy. Then my suggestion is if you are not completely gray to consider Redken Shakes EQ which is a semi permanent color. It will just fade with time. If you are more gray you will probably need the Redken Color Gels which are permanent and with only 10 volume developer which will just deposit the color and be gentle on the hair. Then from there if you feel the gray needs more coverage the hairdresser can use 20 or higher developer. But in my experience the lower the developer the less damage to the hair with the same result. It would be a different situation if you were lightening your hair. Hope that helps!
Hi Giddles. Can you give me advice about my White, grey, and very peppery-n- salty hair. I stoppped colouring about 2 months ago. So my in the past ever so dark hair that is now bleached blonde has about 2 inches of the white, grey mix. Should I cut it all off in a cute pixie or just let it go until I can't stand it anymore. Is there any way of colouring the hair all white...can that be done. I trust your advice. Thanks

Dear Mrspstidbits,
In my opinion, cutting it off would be too drastic. If you are 100% sure you want to grow out the ends, perhaps you should go to Sally's Beauty Supply and get one of those Roux Rinses. You use it after you shampoo and can use it right in the shower. It is called a temporary rinse. It would help to keep you looking more one color until the ends grow out. It is pretty cheap and you should be able to find one that matches the color you want. Ask for assistance from the staff there. Follow the directions on the bottle. It is really harmless color and only lasts until you shampoo again. That would be a short term solution for the "growing out" stage. You can visit their website: http://www.haircareusa.com/roux_fanci_full_rinse.htmHope this is helpful.
